Do you ever feel like you are the only person who does not know what you want to do in the future? You may not know what job to get, what to study, that is if you even want to go into further education. Yet everyone around you seems to have an idea, or a well thought out plan, and you feel like you are wasting time.
I had to stay on for an extra year in Sixth Form due to an illness, this was difficult for me at the time, I felt like I was being left behind, I was a year behind my best friends, they were off to university and I was not. I felt like I had let myself down, yet I could not control any of it, and I never understood any of this at the time.
Fast forward a year and I had finally finished school, and the next step? University! As I already ‘lost’ a year, I automatically told myself I had to go to university as I could not waste another year. Looking back, I pressured myself into applying, I rushed into it. I just applied for a course and went for it. Fortunately it was a great decision! I am completing my degree (graduating this year), and I am starting to love life. Do not worry, I am not going to go all ‘Yolo’ on you all, but at the end of the day, we do have one life right? So do whatever makes you happy!
Many people end up going into a completely different career then what they originally thought they would a year ago. I know people who trained to become teachers, but they are now halfway to becoming a nurse or a lawyer. Things change in life, it is unpredictable, that is what makes it more fun and exciting right?! What if you knew what you would be doing next month or next year, your every day planned out? That would be very boring indeed.
Things in life appear to challenge us, to make us stronger and they happen for a reason, I am a big believer of that.
Your friends will go to college or university, move away from home or live in a different country, just because the people around you are doing such things, it does not mean you have to, if you wait a year, then you wait a year. Looking back, that year I told myself I ‘wasted’ was not wasted at all, a year is nothing when looking at things in perspective. You could learn so much in that year, and we all know how time flies.
People do things at different times in their lives, someone might go to university at 18 years old, but someone else might go when they are 40. That does not make one person better than the other, the things we want in life are different when we are grown up. Things do become more clearer and you can understand why things may happen, even if you do not want them to.
Just because you may not know what you want to happen in your life, this does not make you weird, or not normal. It is actually more normal than you think, it happens to so many people, you are not alone! Our life is what we make of it, I could quite easily go into a job after graduating but not be happy with it, but I now know what I want, yes it has taken me a good few years to figure this out, but so what?! That does not matter at all, we will get to where we want to be one day, and it does not matter how old we are when you do.
If you do not know what to do with your future, do not worry! Things will work out, do not pressure yourself because of other people, do not compare yourself to them! Let them concentrate on their lives and you on yours!
